Let's be real. We don't always crave the healthiest foods. In fact, sometimes we stumble across something that we KNOW should only be eaten a few times a year. This is one of those things. We were doing the show yesterday and I was CRAVING a fried egg breakfast sandwich. But just not any fried egg breakfast sandwich, but one where you add bacon, cheese and then lightly dredge sourdough bread through the bacon fat (both sides) and toast it up (either on the pan or in a toaster oven. Please don't use a conventional toaster, it might get messy/dangerous) and top it with pickled red onions for some bite and some crunch. It. Was. Amazing.
Marcus D.'s 'Dirty' Breakfast Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 1 egg, fried as you like
- 1 slice cheese of your choice(I used cheddar). Cut in half.
- 1 slice bacon, cut in thirds
- 2 slices of sourdough bread
- Pickled red onions
Directions:
- preheat a small skillet and fry the bacon to your liking, set aside
- lightly dredge both sides of bread (I used sourdough) and toast in the oven. This is the dirty part. You could also pull out a second larger skillet and brown the bread on both sides but that will take way longer).
- Fry an egg as you like. I LOVE 'over easy' because I love when the yolk is runny and makes my sandwich EXTRA 'dirty.'
- Layer as follows: bread, 1 half of cheese, egg, bacon, second slice of cheese, top with pickled red onions(I like TONS) and second slice of bread.
- Cut diagonally (it just tastes better) and enjoy!
Why you NEED pickled red onions in your life at all times:
Pickled red onions are one of those things that you should just have a jar of in your refrigerator at all times. They are acidic little bites that pair PERFECTLY with fatty foods (I know you already like those). Throw them on tacos, burgers, breakfast sandwiches, BBQ etc etc etc. These vinegary little nuggets have a slight sweetness to them and are actually really good just eating by themselves right out of the jar. Depending on how you prepare them, they can be kind of biting or really mellow. Try it!
