Yesterday I was reading about "Rainbow Day Camp"- a summer camp that embraces transgender and gender-fluid kids- but I had no idea it was born right here in the Bay Area! It was started by Sandra Collins, a former college professor, who struggled to find a camp where her transgender daughter Scarlett would feel comfortable. She said, "I used to say the camp began out of sadness, because of this experience," she said, "but a friend encouraged me to reframe it. The camp began out of love."
There's a summer camp for kids, programs for teens, and support for parents. I LOVE that this even exists. Major kudos to Sandra Collins- and all the parents, caregivers, teachers, and psychotherapists involved. EVERY person- child, teenager, and adult- deserves to feel comfortable and safe in their own skin. And most importantly- supported, and loved.
