Thursday (August 13) the city of San Jose installed touch-free crosswalk devices aimed at protecting pedestrians during the coronavirus pandemic. Pedestrians can now just move their hand over the sensors versus touching the crosswalk device with their hands, elbows, shirts, etc. According to Santa Clara County Roads and Airports engineer Ananth Prasad (who designed the sensors) the new sensors are no more expense than the push-button controls, and swiping the old ones out is no hassle. California already fast-tracked the approval process leaving Santa Clara County on track to replace all of its sidewalk buttons.
In a public statement, Prasad shared,
“I feel good because you know it’s helping public. We are here to serve the public in any way which form, and this is something that was called on us to step up and we’re happy that we delivered it.”
