Berkeley To Ban Junk Food at Grocery Store Checkout Lines

The city of Berkeley, California is on track to become the very first city in the United States to pass a policy that will ban junk food and other unhealthy items at grocery store check out aisles. Grocery stores larger than 2,500 square feet will no longer be able to sell chips, candy bars, soda, and other sweetened beverages. The policy states that only food items with no more than 5 grams of added sugar or 250 milligrams of sodium per serving will be allowed to be sold at check out. Safeway, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Berkeley Bowl in Berkeley will all follow this policy March 2021.
