Meghan Markle Reportedly Struggling To Not Defend Herself Against Backlash

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Visit Reprezent

It's been a tough few days for Meghan Markle. The Duchess of Sussex has faced a ton of backlash after using private jets to travel twice this summer, despite being a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability. Royal protocol forbids Meghan from speaking publicly about the scandal, as well. Though many of her famous friends, including Elton John and Ellen Degeneres, defended the Duchess, Meghan is reportedly struggling not to do so herself.

An Us Weekly insider told the outlet that Meghan “feels that there is a standard set very high by [Kate Middleton]. It’s discouraging that the British public holds her up to that. Meghan has this sense of isolation being in the U.K., subject to cruel British media. Her hands are tied and she isn’t allowed to defend herself. It has been very difficult.”

It's true that Meghan is often compared to Kate. Shortly after Meghan and Prince Harry were called out for flying private, Kate and Prince William were spotted on a budget airline flight to Scotland with their three children. Critics immediately called for Meghan to act more like her sister-in-law even though the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have flown private many times over the years, as well.

Meghan has long struggled not to speak out against the consistent criticism she's faced since joining the royal family in 2018. “It’s just been frustrating and stressful to have no voice,” another royal insider told Us back in December. “She’s always relied on her own voice to stand up for others, and for herself. So not being able to say anything is a debilitating feeling. She’s always been so independent, her entire life, and that’s all been taken away from her. She’s always been able to clap back on social media and now she can’t.”
