Robert Downey Jr. Might Return As Tony Stark In New 'Black Widow' Movie

'Avengers: Endgame' Asia Press Conference In Seoul

Is Robert Downey Jr. putting on Iron Man's suit one more time?

According to Deadline, the actor is reportedly slated to reprise his role as Tony Star, the man behind the high-flying superhero, with an appearance in Marvel's upcoming Black Widow spin-off flick. Whether Downey will gear up to fight again or simply make a cameo in the Scarlett Johansson starrer, opening in theaters in May 2020, the outlet does not indicate.

Specifically, Deadline reported that "Downey will be seen in the role of Stark one more time, however, in the Marvel prequel Black Widow in May 2020." Still, this remains to be confirmed — but even the slightest notion of Downey's return is a big deal, as previous reports revealed his contract with the MCU would end with Avengers: Endgame.

Black Widow was among the slate of Phase 4 films announced from the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the Hall H panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego in July. Alongside Johansson, and a rumored Downey, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), David Harbour (Stranger Things), Florence Pugh, and O-T Fagbenle will also star in the movie, directed by Cate Shortland and written by Jac Schaeffer.

There's much left to be revealed about Black Widow, though Shortland told LADbible of Johansson's character: "I think that's what drew me to the story, [Black Widow]'s got so many secrets, she's got so much vulnerability and I think that's what makes her such a great heroine."

She continued: "In this film we get to understand her past and put the pieces of herself together and come out a whole person."
