At Least 8 Dead Including Suspect In Shooting Near Downtown San Jose

A shooting in San Jose on Wednesday morning (May 26) resulted in multiple fatalities, reports NBC Bay Area.

The incident occurred near a Valley Transportation Authority light rail maintenance yard north of the downtown area.

VTA Spokesperson Brandi Childress said there were reports of an active shooter and employees had been evacuated, reports CNN.

According to NBC Bay Area, the shooting resulted in at least eight deaths. San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo tweeted that "several people" were "being treated, but the situation is still being assessed."

Deputy Russel Davis said that VTA employees were among the victims, but identities have not yet been revealed.

San Jose officials later announced that the suspect was also dead.

The shooter was identified by NBC Bay Area as VTA employee Samuel Cassidy.

Dozens of units, including San Jose Police and Santa Clara County sheriff's vehicles, responded to the scene at Younger Avenue and San Pedro Street near the VTA yard.

At 9:13 A.M. PT San Jose Police Media Relations announced that the area was still an active scene and asked the public to stay away from the area as authorities conduct an investigation.

The investigation will be managed by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and will be assisted by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
