Grey’s Anatomy has officially cast Candis Cayne for a "groundbreaking" story set to play out this season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Candis is set to play a transgender patient who needs vaginoplasty surgery, which is often used as part of sex reassignment.
Candis has appeared on Catilyn Jenner’s reality series, I Am Cait, in the shows Nip/Tuck, Elementary, and The Magicians (among others) and on Amazon’s Transparent.
She is also the first transgender actress to play a transgender character on primetime television.
The role was inspired by Hayley Anthony, a trans woman who helped invent the surgery that “revolutionizes the making of a vagina” and then had it performed on her.
The show is already making progress in the way trans people are portrayed on television.
This season, one character, Dr. Casey Parker, came out as a “proud trans man” after he saved the hospital from hackers this season.
With Candis' role, Grey's hopes to "change the way trans characters are portrayed on the small screen," further.
Candis Cayne's episodes are on deck for later in the season so we'll find out then.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on ABC.
