Hackers stole information for up to 500 million guests of the Marriott hotel empire over four years!
Marriott said that the hackers obtained credit card and passport numbers and other personal data and acknowledges this as one of the largest security breaches in history.
Marriott is trying to determine if the records included duplicates, such as a single person staying multiple times.
The company said the credit card information was stored in encrypted form and it was possible that hackers also obtained the two components needed to descramble the numbers.
The stolen information could possibly be used by criminals to create fraudulent bank accounts so take precaution.
Marriott has set up a website and call center for customers who believe they are at risk.
Also email notifications for those who may have been affected have started rolling out.
